Here are 10 habits of those who exercise regularly and what helps them maintain this.
They always do something – doing some form of exercise is better than doing nothing at all.
They exercise with a friend/partner/family member – it is always easier to continue to exercise when you have someone else to keep you honest.
Preparation – They have their gear washed and ready for the week ahead, and it is always in sight as a reminder.
They remember how they feel when they do exercise – The days where you do exercise, you feel better, lighter and will usually have more energy.
Standing more than sitting – At work, at home or wherever you are stand don’t sit. Standing forces muscles to be working. Every little bit counts.
They have an exercise plan – Plan out your exercise for the week and also plan for recovery and rest as well. Recovery is your friend when adapting to exercise.
Guidance to find the best exercise for them – Seeing an exercise professional, like an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, to plan and design a program that suits their specific needs.
Doing incidental exercise throughout their day – Take the stairs, park further away. Every little bit of extra exercise will make a difference. “Little by little, a little becomes a lot” – Tanzanian proverb.
Long-term expectations – Change takes time and hard work. You will not usually see any significant changes for 6-8 weeks, as this is how long it will take for adaption to occur. Patience and commitment is key.
Setting achievable goals – When goal setting it is important that they are SMART goals.
Specific – weight loss, running a certain distance etc Measurable – using objective measures Achievable – something that is attainable Realistic – can you actually reach that goal Timely – set a timeline and stick to it
