If you’re a parent of a toddler, chances are two words may have evoked a bit of fear and apprehension in you: toilet training! Sure, it can be frustrating and extremely hard work, but there are things you as a parent can do to ensure the transition from nappies and pull ups to the big toilet is made easier!
So here are the top three things you need to do as a parent to help your child toilet train:
- Drink water regularly: Water is essential for our body’s health, and as you probably know, drinking water helps our bladder and bowel to work effectively. Having a happy, healthy bowel and bladder is essential in helping your child make the toilet training journey successfully. So, be sure to provide plenty of water to your child throughout the day, and lead by example. Drink plenty of water yourself!
- Enjoy a healthy, balanced diet as a family: Also on the topic of keeping your bowel and bladder working well, you need to ensure that as a family, you all enjoy a healthy, balanced diet. Make sure your diet covers the four food groups, and be sure to feed your family foods that are high in fibre and water content. Our bowel and bladder love us for this, and of course, that means your child will have an easier time using the toilet when they need to. So enjoy lots of wholemeal and cereal products, along with fresh fruit and vegetables, in addition to nuts and foods containing nuts.
- Get active and have fun: As you know, having a healthy and active lifestyle means a happy, healthy bowel. Engage your children in activities that involve exercise – it doesn’t have to be strenuous at all! Something as easy as walking in the park, kicking a ball or playing on play equipment is all it takes.
Of course, you can talk to any one of our qualified and experienced chiropractors about ways you can follow these recommendations for an easier toilet training experience. All the best with it!
