What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Expert Exercise Guidance for Injury Recovery

Accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) are allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise for the prevention and management of chronic diseases, and musculoskeletal injuries. AEPs provide support for clients with conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, mental health problems, cancer, arthritis, pulmonary disease, musculoskeletal injuries and more.

Exercise physiology (EP) is ideal for patients who require help with:

  • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation
  • From inter-referrals by other health practitioners once the patient has been diagnosed and progressed through the acute phase of rehabilitation
  • Pre-habilitation and injury prevention
  • Post acute injury/surgery recovery and long term rehabilitation
  • Chronic disease management through exercise for conditions such as
  • Cardiovascular (Heart failure, recovery from: MI, stroke, surgery etc.)
  • Pulmonary (Asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease etc.)
  • Neurological (Parkinson’s, dementia, para- and quadriplegic etc.)
  • Cancer (through treatment and between treatments for the management of side effects)
  • Metabolic diseases (diabetes control, prevent progression of pre diabetes, gestational diabetes etc.)
  • Overcoming persistent pain caused by injury and overuse
  • General strength and conditioning

Exercise physiologists can also conduct:

  • Functional assessments
  • Sub-maximal and maximal fitness tests
  • Anthropometrical measurements
  • Musculoskeletal assessments
  • Provide lifestyle education
